Financial assistance for students

We understand that COVID-19 continues to have a financial impact on many of our students and we want to support you to successfully continue your studies for the rest of this year.

Through both University and Government funding, we now have an additional $1.5 million to support you if you have been affected by COVID-19. Information on the different types of assistance available, and how to apply, are outlined below.

Temporary financial assistance

Student Assistance Programme

All students who are enrolled at Massey can apply for temporary financial assistance of up to $500 through the Student Assistance Programme. This programme has received additional funding from the University and is administered by our student associations. Applications for these grants close on 12 December 2020.

Technology Assistance Programme

The Technology Assistance Programme offers students assistance with access to technology required to study online. Open to full or part-time students the assistance is aimed at enabling all students to access online learning opportunities.

Applicants must be enrolled in the coming semester and the loan of equipment will be on a semester-by-semester basis. Students will be required to sign a loan agreement that includes a commitment to good stewardship of the equipment. Students can apply for loan equipment through the student portal scholarships tab.

Red Cross - International Student Support

The NZ Red Cross has launched an assistance programme to support people on temporary visas, including International Students, who are in New Zealand and facing significant hardship due to COVID-19. The support comes in the form of vouchers and it can help cover the costs of food, unexpected medical expenses and - on a case-by-case basis - accommodation and utilities.

The programme runs through until the end of 2020. Applications are by email or phone and all details are available on the Red Cross website.

Building your financial resilience

COVID-19 has highlighted the precarious state of many New Zealanders’ finances and the need to build financial resilience. This is key to long-term financial security and we want to help all our students manage their money better. In collaboration with University’s Fin-Ed Centre (Financial Education and Research Centre), all Massey University students now have access to a comprehensive financial skills training course at no cost. This is available on Stream for you to access and work your way through at a time that suits you best.
