Dr Nitin Bhatia PhD
Research Officer - Precision Agriculture
Contract Research UnitProviding expertise in hyperspectral remote sensing and AI by utilizing advanced techniques to extract meaningful information from airborne/spaceborne and lab-based hyperspectral sensors. Estimate the greenhouse gases using remote sensing data. Develop machine learning/deep learning-based models for classification and regression problems. Develop atmospheric correction modules and other image correction modules. As a continuous work of my PhD, I have developed my own atmospheric correction module on Python platform. Provide technical guidance, mentoring and training to technical employees, and PhD and master students. Quantify the propagation of uncertainty in the chain of processes. Sensitivity analysis of parameters/models involved in estimating nutrient content of pasture lands.
My research includes hyperspectral remote sensing and AI with a deep understanding of how to acquire and analyze data from sensors that capture information across a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. I possess expertise in developing algorithms and statistical models to process hyperspectral data and extract meaningful information about natural and built environments. With extensive knowledge of machine learning techniques and can apply them to analyze and interpret complex data sets. Strong analytical skills and proficiency in programming languages (C/C++, Python, R, MATLAB etc).

Doctor of Philosophy
Soon going to start with Dan Sturgess who is going to detect and quantify hydrothermal alteration and volcanic degassing using hyperspectral remote sensing
Jean Henri Odendaal developed (2022) a steerable needle robot with biomaterials for the application of 3D printing in situ towards vivo artificial muscles. He used the hyperspectral sensor to detect the firmness of hydrogels.
Current MSc students:
Sunmeet Bhatia's research focuses on detecting wild carrots using airborne hyperspectral data
Stefan Carter's research aims to identify regional hotspots where mature indigenous forest health in New Zealand is under threat using landscape configuration statistics and classified, multi-spectral satellite imagery
