Thesis Title

The beef industry in Sabah, East Malaysia, is under pressure to increase domestic beef production, and thereby reduce the cost of importing beef, while also providing a means to increase rural incomes. Mr Gobilik reviewed relevant farming technology from New Zealand pastoral systems, especially feed budgeting based on metabolic energy requirement of animals, widely used to describe and quantify beef production systems in New Zealand and Australia. The methodology was adapted to identify the steps for improving the performance of pastoral systems in Sabah. Mr Gobilik's research concluded that to increase the productivity of the beef industry in Sabah, a first step should be to adjust farm system configuration in Sabah for optimal feed conversion efficiency, and only then, to develop pasture husbandry techniques aimed at improving herbage production and nutritive value.
