Mr Liu''sresearch focussed on a class of porous materials known as metal-organic frameworks, which have applications in areas such as carbon dioxide capture, drug delivery, and the destruction of hazardous compounds. Most metal-organic frameworks are very simple, being constructed from just two components. However, Mr Liu devised a method to build up metal-organic frameworks from four components. Previously, this had been thought to be impossible since it was believed that the components would form a mixture of different materials rather than integrate into a single framework. His research demonstrates how the pore architectures of these new materials can be precisely controlled, and how this results in tremendous improvements in their stability and functional properties. These discoveries represent a step-change in the field of porous materials.
