Wireless sensors are increasingly being used in smart networks such as smart power grids, smart buildings and smart industrial process control systems. For sustainable smart networks energy has to be conserved and used efficiently. Mr Basu performed an extensive literature review followed by exhaustive simulation and validated the simulation results in a wide range of experimental scenarios to develop a state-based adaptive power control protocol. This protocol was aimed at reducing energy consumption in low power wireless sensors while maintaining an acceptable application-specific packet success rate or quality of service. The novel state-based approach dynamically adapts to the varying transmission path losses caused by the movement of mobile sensors, obstructions appearing between stationary sensors and a base-station, and movements of objects or humans in between two communicating stations. His results suggest that energy consumption can be reduced by up to 33 percent when compared to legacy wireless transmission protocols.
