The production of functional materials using living organisms is currently undergoing a renaissance as researchers look to leave the dependency on unsustainable raw materials. Microbial cell factories have emerged as a strong candidate for the production of biomaterials from renewable biomass resources, due to their versatility and low manufacturing cost. Mr Wong’s doctoral studies focused on the development of a range of bioengineered bacteria for recombinant production of functional biomaterials. He developed a modular design system to overcome several inherent limitations of recombinant polyester particle technology. Mr Wong’s system for the modular functionalization of polyester particles enables better control of particle uniformity, reproducibility, and immobilized protein density. His findings should advance polyester particle technology to overcome a range of industrial and healthcare challenges.
