One foot on the other side: Changed orientations to death after a near-death experience

A Near-Death Experience (NDE) is an atypical state of consciousness that can occur when coming close to death. These vivid subjective episodes are often personally transformative, with a wide range of psychosocial changes being reported by those who experience them. Using a mixed-method analysis, Ms Lindsay comprehensively explored attitudes and beliefs about death following an NDE. She found that near-death experiencers have a significantly more positive orientation to death, across a variety of different dimensions. Results demonstrated the unique, subjective content of the NDE was integral to any changes, and that NDEs appear to affect beliefs and attitudes to death in a relatively specific and consistent manner. Her findings are discussed in terms of their potential for death education and the treatment of death anxiety.
