Thesis Title
The sexual stories of adults who have lived in out-of-home care as young people

Young people who live in out-of-home care, and adults who have lived in out-of-home care as young people, experience trauma and stigma throughout their lives. Ms Vague used a narrative methodology to explore sexuality and relationships across the lives of this population, and to consider ways in which the political and the personal, and the public and the intimate intersected in their lives. This research was the first to explore sexuality in relation to out-of-home care in New Zealand and found that when their intimate lives became public, the public agenda is placed on to their personal lives. The results also demonstrated that romantic relationships offered connection at a personal level to those who had experienced a lack of connection, and offered inclusion at a societal level to those who had experienced a lack of inclusion.
