Repetition as Revision: Explored through the Revision of Place in JackieKay's Fiere, Kathleen Jamie's The Tree House, and Crane, a Creative Composition by Lynn Davidson

Ms Davidson explored techniques of poetic repetition to analyse if and how they allow for negotiation among meanings, contexts and possibilities in contemporary poetry, with a focus on issues of identity, place and belonging. She approached these questions through a creative project, a collection of poetry that uses anaphora, parallelism and repetends, and a critical analysis of these techniques in the work of two contemporary Scottish poets, Jackie Kay and Kathleen Jamie. She found that repetition enables multiple and mobile responses to the issues of place, belonging and identity, including versions of country, versions of place, ways of belonging and ways of seeing or experiencing nature. She found that both Kay and Jamie emphasise the process of repetition to reflect the process of revising received ideas.

Part of my PhD chapter on Kathleen Jamie’s The Tree House will be published in a volume of essays and original poems on the work of the Scots poet Kathleen Jamie. This is the first scholarly volume dedicated solely to Jamie. The volume will be published by Edinburgh University Press in 2014.
