Mr McKubre-Jordens’s research provides a formal proof to natural generalisations of mathematician Johannes Nitsche’s conjecture concerning the existence, or lack thereof, of harmonic mappings. His theoretical analysis of this proof produces mathematical models of elasticity that show why and how minimum energy deformations fail to exist in a variety of physically relevant scenarios. Mr McKubre-Jordens’s research also proves for the first time that when these deformations do exist, they inherit symmetries of the related energy functionals.
