Whey Protein and Satiety in Humans

Knowledge of satiety is important for the treatment and management of obesity. Mrs Chungchunlam demonstrated that consumption of dairy whey protein compared to carbohydrate resulted in lower subsequent food intake and reduced feelings of appetite in adult humans. Moreover, a study of peripheral hormones and metabolites showed that amino acids and pancreatic polypeptide may be important mediators. Mrs Chungchunlam then sought to uncover the underlying reasons for the stronger satiating effect of whey protein. The intakes of individual protein components of whey and a dietary mixture of free amino acids simulating the amino acid composition of whey protein did not alter satiety relative to whey protein. This suggests that the action of a single amino acid or group of amino acids may be the causative factor. The findings of Mrs Chungchunlam’s dissertation support the use of dairy whey protein as part of a diet to stimulate satiety.
