Excellence in education, from early childhood to postgraduate, is pivotal to a society’s capacity to progress and adapt to changing times. That is why Massey places such strong emphasis on innovative teaching for all its students, specifically those preparing to become teachers.

Massey’s Institute of Education is well-equipped to embrace the spectrum of pedagogical issues and meet the unfolding needs of our diverse society, from developing blended learning platforms to research in teaching mathematics, literacy, inclusive and special education, plus trauma intervention and speech language therapy.

Launched in 2011, the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching is a prime example. Developed by Massey’s special education experts, the course enhances teaching in autism spectrum disorder, hearing and vision impairment, learning and behaviour, and gifted and talented learners. This innovative qualification, taught as a joint venture with the University of Canterbury, uses a blended community of inquiry and interprofessional practice approach. It empowers special education teachers to learn with, from and about each other’s disciplines to help achieve better outcomes for pupils at school and beyond.

Education researchers are making significant advances in other areas of need, with new ground being broken in Pasifika and Māori numeracy education. An innovative, research-based ‘communities of mathematical inquiry’ model has significantly lifted participation and achievement through group learning strategies. It has been endorsed by government agencies so that targeted groups will benefit from these tried and tested techniques.

Speech Language Therapy students are constantly being challenged and trained to address a wide range of health needs in the community. Through an Albany-based clinic, they provide much-needed help for problem feeders with medical conditions, rehabilitate stroke sufferers with language loss problems, and use the latest technology to help severely disabled people communicate.

Massey’s National Centre for Teaching and Learning underpins the University’s reputation for excellence in teaching practice across its colleges and campuses, as well as distance learning. Based at each campus, the centre provides training and resources to ensure an exceptional, distinctive experience for all learners.
