This website is in five sections. In section one are the personnel and areas of research expertise in the Adult Literacy and Communication Research (ALCR) group. The following sections each describe an externally-funded research project in adult learning and literacy undertaken by the ALCR group. The four projects are:
(1) Ministry of Education-funded research which undertook a statistical analysis of demographic factors that predict low literacy proficiency;
(2) Foundation for Research, Science and Technology-funded research into Adult Literacy and Employment;
(3) Health Research Council of New Zealand and Ministry of Health-funded research into Health Literacy and Immunisation;
(4) Tertiary Education Commission and Department of Labour-funded research into NZ Modern Apprentices’ literacy learning.

This study, funded by the Ministry of Education, undertook a statistical analysis of demographic factors which predict low literacy proficiency.
The Adult Literacy and Communication Research group within the School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, Massey University, in partnership with the Wanganui District Library, undertook a major longitudinal research project funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, focusing on adult literacy and employment in Wanganui and Districts
This study, jointly funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Health, explores how health information on infant immunisation can be made easier to access, understand, and remember.
In this research, funded by the Department of Labour, the ALCR group has carried out a formative evaluation of teaching functional literacy to Modern Apprentices whose literacy competencies need strengthening.
