Innovative River Solutions

Providing integrated catchment and river science

The Innovative River Solutions Centre is a hub of expertise on river catchments and provides integrated solutions for the management of New Zealand’s dynamic river systems.

We have staff with expertise in several of the science disciplines within river catchments and they are available to discuss best practices and for consultancy.

Best Practice Workshop -  Solution to Pollution -  Held 11 February 2013

There has been considerable focus on the declining water quality in New Zealand rivers and lakes, but perhaps less focus on the solutions to the issue. This workshop aimed to highlight some potential solutions, or research on solutions, here and internationally, based on ecology, geomorphology, land management and planning / governance.

The workshop focued on management of river dynamics: floods, water storage and land use, setting scientific limits to flows, erosion and habitat quality.

Sessions addressed four broad themes:

  • maintaining ecological integrity;
  • maintaining geomorphological integrity;
  • land management to maintain river limits;
  • integration, policy and planning.

Speakers were invited from science, industry and governance, from New Zealand and overseas. Please see the Best Practise Workshops to view the presentations from this Workshop. Please see under Past Events to download presentations presented during this workshop.
