Changing your study

In general you can add, change or withdraw from qualifications and courses by logging into your student homepage and clicking on the Qualifications and courses tab. Please take note of the deadlines below.

Changing, adding or withdrawing specialisations

When you first apply for courses for an academic year you will be able to add, change or remove specialisations (eg majors, endorsements, minors) as part of course enrolment if your qualification allows it. If you want to make changes at other times please contact us. For some graduate and postgraduate qualifications you will have to reapply for admission to your new specialisation. 

Changing your study location

To change your study location please contact us. Note: If you select a campus location (eg Auckland), you may also enrol in distance courses. But if you select distance you may only enrol in distance courses.

Changing your start semester

To change the semester for your qualification: 

  1. Log into your student homepage.
  2. Click on the Qualifications and courses tab.
  3. Click the Defer link.
  4. Complete the following pages.

Linking courses to a different qualification

If you have courses which are linked to a qualification and you want to link them to a different qualification please contact us.

*If you want to apply after this date you can only do so by applying for special permission. To do this log in to your student homepage, click the Qualifications and courses tab and go to Course enrolment. If you apply for special permission please be aware of the following:

  • Applications received after the due dates can only be accepted if places are still available and the course coordinator gives written approval. This written approval should be uploaded when you apply. 
  • Your ability to access study resources may be delayed.
  • Coursework deadlines cannot necessarily be extended for students who start late. You may need to put in extra effort to catch up.

Definition of "written notification" of withdrawal

In the following sections the definition of "written notification" means a withdrawal which has been submitted online via Course enrolment in your student homepage, or in some exceptional circumstances, withdrawals notified using a course form. 

Withdrawal with a refund of tuition fees

When the University receives written notification of withdrawal from course(s), comprising part but not all of a student's programme(s) for the academic year, before 10 percent of the study period has elapsed for the courses concerned (as defined by the course start and end dates), the student will be eligible to receive a refund of tuition fees paid and no academic penalty shall apply. Students will not receive a refund of non-tuition fees paid and are still required to pay non-tuition fees.

Withdrawal fee

When the University receives written notification of withdrawal from course(s), comprising all of a student's programme(s) for the academic year, after they have accepted an offer of enrolment and before 10 percent of the study period has elapsed for all course(s) (measured from course start date), the student will be eligible to receive a refund of tuition fees and non-tuition fees paid and no academic penalty shall apply. A withdrawal fee is still payable and will be deducted from any refund. 

There are two withdrawal fees, one for new international students and one for domestic students and returning international students. For withdrawal fee details see non-tuition fees.

Withdrawal without academic penalty (no tuition fees refund)

When the University receives written notification of withdrawal from a course(s) after 10 percent of the study period has elapsed but before 75 percent of the study period has elapsed for the course(s) concerned (as defined by the course start and end dates) the student shall be withdrawn without academic penalty but will remain liable to pay all University prescribed fees and will not be entitled to a refund. 

Students who do not attend a course, where they have accepted an Offer of Enrolment and where they have received a Confirmation of Enrolment, will be liable to pay all fees prescribed by the University and are not entitled to any tuition fee refund for that course unless the correct withdrawal procedures are followed and unless the University receives notice of withdrawal before 10 percent of the study period has elapsed (as defined by the course start and end dates).

Withdrawal dates

Each course offering has a specific withdrawal date depending on the course start date. Withdrawal dates are detailed on your Confirmation of Enrolment. Withdrawal dates can also be viewed using the Course search and clicking on your course offering. Students studying from overseas should note that due dates and times are in New Zealand standard time.

Withdrawal with academic penalty (no tuition fees refund)

When the University receives written notification of withdrawal from a course(s) after 75 percent of the study period has elapsed for the course(s) concerned (as defined by the course start and end dates) the student shall be withdrawn with academic penalty and remain liable to pay all University prescribed fees and will not be entitled to a refund.

Withdrawal after 75 percent of the study period is termed ‘withdrawal with academic failure’. The academic record will therefore show DC (Did Not Complete). Repeated DC or academic failure in the same course may result in the University refusing to enrol that person in the course again. Refusal is notified to the student concerned in writing. Unless specifically notified of exclusion from the University, candidates remain eligible to apply to re-enrol in the future.

Withdrawal dates

Each course offering has a specific withdrawal date depending on the course start date. Withdrawal dates are detailed on your Confirmation of Enrolment. Withdrawal dates can also be viewed using the Course search and clicking on your course offering. Students studying from overseas should note that due dates and times are in New Zealand standard time.

Confirmation of changes

In most cases you should receive an additional Confirmation of Enrolment for any changes that you make. If you do not receive this electronic notification you can check on the status of any changes within the Qualifications and courses tab in your student homepage or by contacting us.

Withdrawal may also affect students’ entitlements under the Student Loans and Allowances Schemes. Students should seek advice from StudyLink.
