Frequently asked questions about doctoral scholarships
This page contains the answers to frequently asked questions about the application and administration of doctoral scholarships at Massey University.
1. What are the academic merit and grade selection criteria?
A grade average of A- (7.0 on a nine-point scale) across the postgraduate study with a particular focus on research
2. What additional measures will the selection committee also consider?
- Independent research experience
- Supervisor’s evaluation, as per the application
- Publications as defined in the PBRF Definition of Research
- Creative works
- Professional and/or industry experience and relevant awards
- Ranking of the university or discipline
3. How will the University Scholarships Committee consider whether the research aligns with the strategic priorities of the University?
The following are examples of what may be considered and what should be detailed in the application.
- The proposed research aligns with and adds value to the strategic research platforms of the Academic Unit, College, and University
- The research is interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, and develops collaboration across areas of research of strategic importance to the University
- The research includes collaborations of mutual benefit with partners nationally, internationally, and/or with industry and community
- Promotes equity in line with the Massey University Scholarship Strategy by enabling success for all learners including full time and part time, domestic and international, and Maori and Pacific students
4. What is the eligibility criteria?
Applicants should have a conditional or unconditional admission offer of place in a doctoral programme at Massey University, or, be enrolled in the provisional year of a doctoral degree at the time of application (prior to confirmation of registration). Full-time and part-time candidates are eligible to apply.
Conditional admission offers may be dependent on degree completion with sufficient grades.
5. When are the application deadlines?
Applications close on 1 October for the following year tenure and 1 April for the current year tenure
6. What are the scholarship offer expiry dates?
The doctoral scholarship must be taken up within three months of the offer of scholarship, or within six months if the applicant is international. The earliest a stipend will be paid for the 1 October closing date is in January of the award year. Requests for extensions to scholarship offers must be sent to scholarships@massey.ac.nz and will be considered on a cases-by-case basis.
International candidates must be on shore to enrol and take up the scholarship.
7. When are doctoral stipend payments made?
Payments will be made at the end of each calendar month. Payments will commence the month following enrolment, or for candidates already enrolled, the month following acceptance of the scholarship.
8. Information for international students
International students must have received a doctoral admission offer of place before applying for a Massey doctoral scholarship. Successful scholarship awardees then have six months from the doctoral scholarship offer date to obtain a visa, travel to New Zealand, and enrol in the doctoral programme.
9. Information about Massey University Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships.
All domestic applicants at the 1 October closing date with a grade average of A (8.0 on a nine-point scale) will automatically be considered for a Massey University Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship. Doctoral scholarship recipients from the 1 April closing date round who meet the Massey University Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarship criteria will automatically be considered for a Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral scholarship in the following 1 October closing round.
