Massey is committed to finding innovative solutions to the complex issues New Zealand faces as well as the big global problems. Our research pedigree in agri-food, veterinary medicine and sciences and engineering is recognised locally, nationally and internationally for its value and impact.

We're a world leader in agri-food research and are working at the smart interface between food science and nutrition. The work aims to address food security issues and enhance health and well-being, the impact of which is huge in an export-driven economy such as New Zealand’s.

New Zealand Centre for Precision Agriculture (NZCPA)

NZCPA creates practical land management solutions through the use of leading-edge precision technology tools. Whether you're an individual farmer or a large corporation or government agency, we offer relevant, leading research and site-specific consultancy to help enhance the economic and environmental performance of your land.

Riddet Institute CoRE

The Riddet Institute is a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) focusing on food structures and digestive physiology. The Institute is part of a global food security network which connects Massey to Europe, Latin America, US and China. In addition to frontier science the Institute is active as a policy advocate.

Wildbase Hospital

The Wildbase Hospital is attached to Massey's veterinary school and is New Zealand's only dedicated wildlife hospital. The team is at the forefront of veterinary care of New Zealand’s native birds, half of which are classified as threatened or endangered.

Cross-disciplinary research

We have a strong focus on cross-disciplinary research and there are many examples of how disciplines from the sciences to social sciences and creative arts have come together to solve problems.

Expertise in food innovation

Our expertise in food innovation spans the disciplines of agriculture, horticulture and biosecurity; packaging, refrigeration, nutritional balance and food safety; food technology and engineering; design, branding and marketing.

Joint Centre for Disaster Research

The Joint Centre for Disaster Research is a joint venture between Massey University and GNS Science.

The centre applies a multi-disciplinary teaching and research approach to:

  • understanding the impacts of disasters on communities
  • improving risk management, and
  • enhancing community preparedness, response and recovery from various hazard events.

Sleep/Wake Research Centre

The Sleep/Wake Research Centre conducts multi-disciplinary research using laboratory, field and population-based methodologies to advance scientific knowledge about sleep and waking function. The Centre translates this scientific knowledge into useful tools and strategies for improving health, safety and well-being by working collaboratively with government agencies, industries, community groups and individuals.
