Link to Discover

An easy way to link to Discover (the Library's integrated Google-style search engine) is to use the default Library block in Stream.

Links to Specific Items in Discover

Link directly to any Discover record for a specific item (e.g. book, DVD, music CD).  This is useful for linking to compulsory and recommended textbooks.

  1. Search Discover to find the item.
  2. Click on the name of the item, this will be a link, which will take you to the record for the item.
  3. Look on the right hand side of the screen, find the permalink button and click on it.
  4. The URL will appear at the top of the page in a yellow bar.
  5. Copy the link and paste it into Stream.

Links to Electronic Journal Articles

We can provide persistent links to full-text electronic journal articles for teaching purposes. Use these in preference to providing PDF copies of journal articles, as this may contravene copyright law and/or licensing agreements.

Please note:

  • You must include a complete citation for any copyrighted material that you use. If the article was taken from an article database, the citation should include this information as well
  • Some electronic journals have copyright restrictions which do not allow direct linking from Stream
  • Please acknowledge in your course that access to the article is provided by the Library. Suggested wording is: Provided by the Massey University Library.

Librarians need to create the link to the article to ensure that:

  • A direct link to that article is within the licence agreement for that journal
  • The link contains the authentication code required to ensure that off-campus students and staff, in particular distance students, can use the link successfully

Contact the Library with your journal article citations; if there are no copyright restrictions you will receive the direct link back within 48 hours.

If you have any problems with links you have been given, please contact us.

Links to PDFs of scanned items

If an item (e.g. chapter or article) is available in print only, it may be possible within copyright to scan and upload a PDF copy to Stream. See Stream course creation services.

Links to Ebooks

All Library ebooks are included in Discover. You can provide your students with a link to any ebook record in Discover (see the instructions above).
When your students follow your link they will get to the ebook.

Links to Reading Lists

You can embed a ‘live’ Discover search to give students an up-to-date reading list of Library material on a topic. Unlike a fixed reading list, a live search will automatically include any new Library resources on your subject.

Links to Database Searches

You can embed a ‘live’ search for most databases to give students an up-to-date reading list of journal articles on a topic. As well as providing useful articles, students can see the search strategy used, enabling them to conduct similar database searches on other topics.
