Background

Prior to coming to New Zealand, I taught mathematics and coached football at Millfield School, a private school focused on sport excellence in the UK. I then managed events at one of the UKs leading health and fitness centres, and later for a consultancy firm in Wellington.

Teaching and Research

I came to Massey in 1994, to join the Sport Management & Coaching program, which at the time was new and unique in the New Zealand tertiary sector. My teaching has focused on event management, coaching and leading the sport management and coaching professional development practicum. My research has focused on sport management education, event management, coach education and outdoor experiential education. I have subsequenly received the following research, and teaching awards

  • International ‘Emerald Literati’ Research Award, 2019 for “Outstanding Paper” in Sport, Business and Management: An International Journal. Acknowledged as “one of the most exceptional pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2018
  • New Zealand National Tertiary Teaching Award, 2018 for “Sustained Excellence”
  • Massey University College of Health Research Award – Supervisor, 2020
  • Massey University College of Health Research Award - Individual, 2016 for “Distinction in Research”

  • Massey University Academic Fellowship Award, 2012, for “Leading the University’s Applied Learning Strategy”
  • Massey University Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award, 2007 for “Sustained Excellence”

Community engagement

At Massey, I have chaired the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) committee since 2019. I also led the development of the Sport@Massey initiative in 2016 and chaired the Applied Learning Special Interest Panel in 2012. I have also been on a number of sport, teaching and college committees. Externally, I chair the Universities New Zealand WIL committee and have been a board member of WIL New Zealand from 2010, organising conferences at Massey University in 2010, 2015 and 2019. I have managed a range of major community and national events for the Manawatu Triathlon Club, particulalrly a successful kids triathlon series, which now has some 750 kids participating each wekk over summer. My ongoing involvement/ qualifications in football coaching has been at national, regional, academy, and community levels.

Professor Martin was recognised with a Fellow Award by WILNZ for “outstanding academic contribution to the work-integrated learning (WIL) community” (2022), and named a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK (2021) acknowledging his teaching, scholarship and leadership, specifically related to his coordination of the sport practicum.
