Prof Leigh Signal BAv, DipBusStud, MA, PhD

Professor in Fatigue Management and Sleep Health/Associate Dean, Research

School of Health Sciences

Dr. Leigh Signal is an Associate Professor and is portfolio director of the Fatigue Management and Sleep Health group at the Sleep/Wake Research Centre, Massey University, Wellington. Leigh trained as a Commercial Pilot and then completed a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology before completing her PhD in Public Health at the Sleep/Wake Research Centre.

Leigh is involved in both basic and applied sleep and circadian research with her work spanning two main areas. The first is focused on identifying, managing and mitigating fatigue in applied settings, particularly for the aviation industry. She has worked with aircraft manufacturers, international airlines and regulators and has conducted studies on board aircraft and in the laboratory environment. Leigh provides advice to industry groups and regulators on the management of fatigue and has been an invited member of two International Civil Aviation Organisation Fatigue Risk Management Task Forces to establish global rules and guidelines for managing fatigue in air traffic control and helicopter operations.

Leigh has received funding from New Zealand research agencies to undertake basic sleep science and community based research. This body of work has been focused on understanding basic sleep processes, particularly sleep inertia, and the sleep health of women and children. She is interested in understanding the sleep of women across the perinatal period, the relationship between sleep and mental health, and ways we can support women to maintain good sleep health and mental health across this timeframe. She also has an interest in understanding inequities in sleep for women and children and the sociodemographic factors that drive these differences.

Research Expertise

Research Interests

Her current work is focused in three main areas: understanding the role of sleep and fatigue on performance and safety in applied settings, particularly in the aviation industry; characterising sleep across the perinatal period and the relationship with maternal health; and investigating the time course and magnitude of sleep inertia and changes to sleep at moderate altitudes under controlled laboratory conditions.  She is also interested in the role of sleep in infant and child health and development, and the links between sleep duration and performance and health outcomes.

Research Opportunities

  • Who are the short sleepers?  (01/06/2020) This study is focused on understanding that factors that drive people to be short sleepers. We have an existing dataset that would be suitable for a Master's thesis student.

Project Title: Sleep in Pregnancy & Postpartum: the relationship to maternal health

The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between sleep in late pregnancy and mode of delivery, and sleep early in the postpartum period and changes in postpartum mood. 500 Maori and 500 non-Maori women will be recruited into the study during late pregnancy, at which time they will complete a questionnaire on sleep, lifestyle, social support, mood and health. At 6 weeks postpartum women will be asked 3 questions on sleep via a telephone interview, and at 12 weeks postpartum they will complete a second questionnaire, similar to the first but also incorporating questions on the birth and infant. Information from the first questionnaire will be matched with birth data, and data from all questionnaires related to a measure of postpartum mood/depression. This research will be fundamental in advancing understanding of the links between maternal sleep, birth outcomes and postnatal mental health.

Project Title: Waking up can be hard to do: unravelling the dynamics of sleep inertia

Waking up is a process we all experience at least once a day, yet on some occasions it can seem difficult and take a significant amount of time. The confusion, grogginess, low arousal and reduced functioning experienced on awakening has been well documented and is known as sleep inertia. Previous research indicates that a number of factors can influence the severity and duration of the transition to full wakefulness. These include the stage of sleep a person wakes from, having more deep sleep, being awake for a long period of time prior to sleep, the time of day or night when awakening occurs, and the measure used to quantify sleep inertia. The proposed study involves naps of 20, 40 and 60 minutes ending at 1200 after 30 hours of wakefulness. Intensive testing will occur immediately following awakening to accurately measure sleep inertia. This study builds on our previous work to systematically manipulate the factors affecting the magnitude and time course of sleep inertia after naps at different times of the day and night. It will significantly advance basic scientific understanding of the dynamics of sleep inertia and is directly relevant to the issue of workplace napping in safety critical settings.

Project Title: Sleep during Pregnancy and Postpartum: The relationship with maternal health

These changes should be used to inform women about the extent of change in sleep, particularly early post-partum, and to help health-care providers identify women experiencing severe sleep loss and disruption and discuss possible coping strategies with them.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching Statement

My aim is to enable sleep and circadian science to be accessible to all and that as a topic it is integrated into all aspects of health education at an appropriate level. I contribute to a number of different undergraduate and postgraduate courses as a guest lecturer and am extensively involved in professional education opportunities.
