Prof Karen Witten MSc, PhD

Professor of Public Health/Associate Director, SHORE & Whariki Research Centre

SHORE Centre

Karen Witten is a geographer and psychologist with an interest in urban neighbourhoods and how their design and infrastructure influences the social relationships, transport choices and well-being of residents. Recent and current studies include: investigating how the physical and social neighbourhood environment influences the physical activity behaviours of children and adults; children’s experience and use of diverse urban neighbourhoods;  process and impacts of school closure; social, transport mode use and health impacts of a street re-design intervention; residential choice and community formation in various urban development models.

Project Title: Multi storey living with kids in mind: contraints and opportunities for children's mobility and development in the context of competing discourses of safety and independence

The number of families with children living in intensive urban environments in Aotearoa/New Zealand has greatly increased in the past decade. This trend is likely to continue given housing affordability issues, rising transport costs, and nation-wide policies of urban intensification. Opportunities for outdoor play and independent mobility have been shown to effect children's healthy cognitive, social and physical development. Yet lack of children's outdoor amenities and an overwhelming emphasis on safety has resulted in a generation of urban children increasingly oriented to `the great indoors', closely supervised while outside, and chauffeured to school and other activities by parents. The aim of this project is to understand opportunities and constraints on play and independent activity for children living in medium and high density housing in inner city Auckland. It will investigate the mobility of children (8-11years) using Geographic Positioning and Information Systems (GPS and GIS); and, through one-on-one interviews, examine and contrast children's and parents' discourses and practices around play, safety, the built environment and wellbeing.

Project Title: Children's mobility and physical activity in higher density urban neighbourhoods

This research investigates how urban neighbourhood environments can facilitate children's independent mobility (outdoor play and travelling to destinations unsupervised), thereby influencing physical activity accumulation and participation in daily life. The study will be located in six Auckland neighbourhoods, diverse in terms of urban design attributes which have the potential to influence children's mobility and physical activity. Participants will comprise 120 children aged 8-11 years and their parents/caregivers. Objective measures (global positioning systems, accelerometers, geographical information systems, observational audits) will be used to assess children's independent mobility and physical activity, neighbourhood infrastructure and streetscape attributes. Parents and children's neighbourhood perceptions and experiences will be assessed using qualitative research methods. This study will contribute children's experience and voice to urban planning to ensure children's health and wellbeing are to the fore in the transition to higher density neighbourhoods in Auckland and elsewhere in New Zealand.
