Dr Nick Kim BSc(Hons), PhD

Senior Lecturer in Applied Environmental Chemistry

Doctoral Mentor Supervisor
School of Health Sciences

Nick's main teaching and research interests lie in the area where applied environmental chemistry meets human health risk assessment. Before coming to Massey, Nick worked as both a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Waikato (1991-2001), and a scientific advisor to the Waikato Regional Council (2002-2011). His background covers a range of applied chemistry areas including environmental chemistry, human and environmental risk assessment, analytical chemistry and forensic science. From his work with local government Nick has broad experience with the technical aspects of applied resource management including regional analysis of air, soil and water quality for state of the environment (SoE) purposes, scientific assessment of resource consents, management of contaminated sites and chemical emergencies, development of regional and national policy in the environmental chemistry area, and provision of expert evidence in Environment Court.

My background is in applied environmental chemistry, and my main research interests relate to the diffuse contamination of natural and built environments. I have worked as University academic (at Waikato 1991-2001 and Massey from 2012), a science advisor to local government (Waikato Regional Council 2002-2011), and a senior policy analyst in central government (6 months to May 18). I have experience with analytical and environmental chemistry, forensic science, human and environmental risk assessment, air, soil and water quality, resource consenting, management of contaminated sites and chemical emergencies, development of national guidelines and standards, the machinery of government, and expert evidence.
