Dr Ralph Bathurst is a musician who performs orchestral music (viola) and light jazz (piano). This background in music making informs his primary interests which focus on how organisations can become more humane places where people can discover a sense of freedom and creativity. His work life experiences in management and leadership within arts and social organisations translate directly into his teaching and research practice. Primarily his emphasis is on the arts, particularly music and the visual arts, and how they encourage collaborative leadership approaches and organisational development. Allied to these are keen interests in business sustainability, and educational processes that develop active enquiry through the performing and visual arts.

Dr Bathurst is on the Editorial Board of Leadership, Corporate Governance and Sustainability International Group and Public Administration Review, and is an editor of Organizational Aesthetics. He co-leads the Asia Dialogues team, a group which runs monthly seminars which explore the multicultural dimensions of Auckland City and Aotearoa New Zealand, and co-chairs Qualitative Research Inquiry Group both at Albany campus. He recently completed six years serving on the Massey University Human Ethics Committee (Northern). For three years he was Chair of this committee and his experiences in this role inform his ongoing interest and helping scholars conduct ethical research.

Dr Ralph Bathurst is a leadership scholar focusing on the arts of leadership and the aesthetics of organisations.  He has published in Leadership, Journal of Management Inquiry, International Journal of Arts Management, ephemera: theory & politics in organization and Philosophy of Management. He maintains an interest in arts organisations and their sustainability, focusing on how the arts can influence business practice.

Research Interests

Primarily an ethnographer, Ralph researches leadership within arts organisations as well as seeking for ways in which the arts can assist the business community develop more sustainable processes and practices. Thus his research embraces both the theory and practice of organisational leadership and in particular the ways in which music and the performing arts embody effective leadership.
