Dr Stuart Hunter

Senior Lecturer in Wildlife Health

School of Veterinary Science

As a Senior Lecturer in Wildlife Pathology at Massey University, caseload consists purely of wildlife species, predominantly endangered native avian species, with a smaller number of amphibians and reptiles (the Grand Skink and Otago Skink for example), the majority of which are submitted through the Department of Conservation and affiliates, as well as the Wildbase here at Massey University. I also regularly receive animals or formalin-fixed tissues from Wellington and Auckland Zoos, as well as some of the smaller zoological parks around the country.  I am also contracted with Maritime New Zealand to perform complete necropsies on marine mammals (beached and by-catch), most of which are New Zealand Fur Seals, New Zealand Sea Lions, and Hector’s dolphins.

I spent four years at North Carolina State University, two of those as an Assistant Professor in Anatomical Pathology. This involved necropsy and histopathology of a variety of domestic and wildlife species.
