Prof Wendi Roe BSc, BVSc (Dist), PhD, Dipl (ACVP)

Professor of Veterinary & Marine Mammal Pathology

Doctoral Mentor Supervisor
School of Veterinary Science

Deputy Head of School

School of Veterinary Science

Professor Roe is a veterinary pathologist with a special interest in marine mammals. She graduated from Massey University with a BVSc in 1990, and spent 10 years in companion animal and mixed practice in New Zealand and England. In 2000 Professor Roe returned to Massey to undertake a residency in veterinary pathology, followed by a year as a clinical instructor in the Pathobiology department at Washington State University. She achieved board certification in Anatomic Pathology in 2004. Her research is focussed on infectious disease and causes of mortality in marine mammals, particularly New Zealand's endanged and endemic species: Hector's and Māui dolphins and the New Zealand sea lion.

Professor Roe has been a faculty member at Massey since 2003, and completed her PhD in veterinary science in 2008. She is internationally recognised for her clinical and research contributions in marine mammal pathology, with a focus on infectious disease and trauma. Her research findings have informed government policy on management of endangered marine mammal species and she regularly acts as an expert adviser in this field. She is involved with teaching veterinary pathology to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has served in a range of management roles within the School of Veterinary Science, currently as Deputy Head of School and Dean of Postgraduate Studies.
